The fact that the peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan have already existed for decades is testimony to the fact that reality is more complex than the view Shamir espoused

In 1989, in response to the Palestinians’ recognition of UN General Assembly Resolution 181 and UN Security Council Resolution 242 a year prior, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir summed up the worldview that has been dominant ever since among large parts of the Israeli right: “They used to talk about throwing us into the sea. Today, they don’t say that. They’ve become more sophisticated – [demanding] self-determination for the Palestinians. … But if we look at reality, it hasn’t changed. The Arabs are the same Arabs … and the sea is the same sea. The objective has remained the same: the destruction of the State of Israel.”
