Stew Young, former longtime mayor of Langford, has been elected once again.

Young won 9,801 of the votes as of 9:40 p.m., or 64.1 per cent of the vote, beating out the only other candidate, incumbent Scott Goodmanson, who had received 5,411 votes (35.4%).

Young is a familiar face in Langford politics. He was elected Langford’s first mayor when it was incorporated in 1992 and held the seat for 30 years until 2022.

His streak ended when Goodmanson, the only other contender in 2022, won the election with 4,483 votes to Young’s 3,796.

This year, Young ran on a platform of four priorities: affordability, safety – responsible growth and infrastructure – and families, sports and recreation.

After securing the win, Young said he was ready to “get Langford back on track again.”

“What I want to do is make sure that we build what’s best for Langford. We move Langford forward, and basically, I got four or eight years left to do this,” he told CHEK News.

“I’m going to look for advice from the residents of Langford, the business community especially, because they’re the ones that pay the highest taxes.”

He said he wants to ensure free parking in the West Shore city and lower taxes by once again paving the way for more development.

“Let the future development pay its way, and that was really one of the strongest messages that I got,” he said.

For his upcoming term, he’ll look for help from an almost brand-new council.

Sixteen people were running for the city’s six council seats, including four incumbents. But preliminary results show that only one incumbent councillor — Colby Harder — won back her seat.

Harder will be joined by seven new faces to council, including top vote-getter among councillors, Lisa Foxall, who received 8,547 votes, or 56.1 per cent of the vote.

Incumbents Mary Wagner, Keith Yacucha and Kimberley Guiry finished behind Harder and will not be back on council.

“I know these people that ran with me. I’m so excited to work with them,” Young said. “So this is really important. It’s the perfect transition for Langford to get us back on track again. And I’m excited to be the leader of this community with so much support from the residents of Langford.”
