Georgia became the latest unbeaten team to fall from the No. 1 ranking Saturday, losing 27-24 at home to unranked Auburn on a last-second 34-yard field goal.

The Tigers (2-2 SEC, 4-2 overall) were three-touchdown underdogs but became the second consecutive unranked team to stun the Bulldogs (4-1, 6-1) after unranked Oklahoma beat then-No. 1 Texas 27-24 last week. It’s the first time in 36 years that the No. 1 team in college football had lost in consecutive weeks.

Auburn scored only its third victory in five years over a ranked opponent

“I’m just grateful to our guys for just continuing to plug,” first-year Auburn head coach Alex Golesh said in an emotional interview. “You can have so many narratives and stories. I’m grateful for our guys, our coaches, our fan base that’s been through a lot. We’re going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it. One game at a time. Just hang with us. This locker room, these dudes that chose to stay, that’s what it’s all about. I’m really proud of our guys.”

The win in Athens marked the first time Auburn had beat a top-ranked Georgia team since 1942 and also the Tigers’ first victory in the series since 2017.

The winning kick by Alex McPherson was set up by a roughing the passer penalty against Georgia’s Gabe Harris Jr., for a late hit on Auburn quarterbabck Byrum Brown after an incomplete pass with 15 seconds to play. The penalty moved the Tigers 15 yards to the Bulldogs’ 19.

Georgia was driving for a game-winning field goal when quarterback Gunner Stockton fumbled near midfield to set up Auburn’s final drive. The Bulldogs had tied the game at 24 with 2:58 to play on a 4-yard pass from Stockton to London Humphreys.

“Tough one,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “We like to say the Dawgs don’t beat the Dawgs, but they found a way to beat themselves today. Like I say, humility is a week away. Auburn played better than us today, executed better than us today. Didn’t turn the ball over. And we had some really untimely, undisciplined and uncharacteristic penalties.”

After Georgia jumped out to a 14-0 lead on its first two possessions, Auburn scored 24 consecutive points behind Brown, who threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Brown completed 15 of 26 passes for 150 yards and rushed for 115 yards on 26 carries.

Stockton was 22 of 34 passing for 272 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The loss leaves the SEC with no unbeaten teams as the midseason jockeying heats up for a College Football Playoff berth.
