Bayern Munich have given an update on Vincent Kompany after their head coach collapsed during a training session involving the reserve side on Friday and was taken to hospital.
The club announced that evening that “Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.”
Board member for sport Max Eberl stated: “Vincent’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. His coaching staff – in whom we have complete confidence – will take over his duties. Everyone at Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”

Speaking the following morning at the pre-match press conference before visiting Freiburg on Sunday, Eberl provided an update on matters:
“The good news is he’s stable. I spoke with him last night, with his wife too. It wasn’t a nice moment for all of us. He collapsed on the pitch yesterday and will spend a few more days in hospital until everything is checked over. It shows again how health is the most important thing in life – not football. So, all of us send our best wishes. We as Bayern stand together. The most important thing is that the cause is established and he gets fit again. He’ll only come back when he’s fit.
“He’d already been having minor problems last week. The doctors are doing nothing but trying to find out what it is. The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover. I’m not a doctor.
“Vinnie will get all the time he needs. We’re not going to start setting any timeframes. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it’s a question of what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking in terms of days, but weeks. We’re all clear on that.”

Aaron Danks was alongside Eberl at the press conference to discuss the Freiburg game and explained that he and his fellow assistant coaches, including René Marić, will continue to prepare as normal. The Englishman also stated that they will only talk to Kompany “on a friendly basis” and do not want to stress him with sporting matters.
