A pedestrian has died after being struck by a pickup truck at a Winnipeg crosswalk Friday evening.

Officers responded to Main Street and Jarvis Avenue around 7:45 p.m. on Friday after learning of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, police said in a news release.

Police said a man in his 60s had been crossing Main at a crosswalk when he was hit by an oncoming pickup truck.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later died from his injuries.

The driver stayed at the scene and the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information, including video surveillance or dashcam video, is asked to contact the traffic unit at 204-986-7085.

Point Douglas resident Chayna Lowe and her husband were driving home when they saw the man lying on the ground in the recovery position and surrounded by bystanders. The couple had been turning left from Main onto Jarvis when they saw the aftermath of the fatal crash.

“It’s very traumatic,” she said. “It’s quite terrifying to think that I just missed seeing that happen. And that’s something that sticks with you for a long time.”

“It was a horrible tragedy that could have been prevented if people just slowed down,” Lowe said.

It’s not the first time she’s seen a serious collision at Main and Jarvis.

“Whether it’s going north or south, there’s issues at that intersection.  North, south, east, west —  I’ve seen accidents in all the directions,” she said.

Lowe says the area often sees people struggling with addiction issues and drivers need to be alert and watch for individuals who are under the influence.

She said motorists going under the nearby underpass need to slow down too because they may not have enough time to stop when a pedestrian is crossing at that crosswalk.

Main and Jarvis is “not a controlled intersection,” Lowe said, and she would like to see traffic lights installed there to make it safer for pedestrians and drivers alike.
