The first official day of winter is weeks away but Alberta’s balmy fall is about to come to an abrupt end.

The Edmonton region is expected to get walloped with its first significant snowfall of the season.

Environment Canada has issued a series of special weather statements for Edmonton and surrounding communities including Fort Saskatchewan, Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Evansburg.

According to the weather advisories issued Tuesday afternoon, a “long duration snowfall event” is expected to hit this evening and continue until Thursday morning.

Total snowfall amounts may reach 15 centimetres, the weather agency warned.

Environment Canada said the arrival of wintery weather may have a significant impact on rush hour traffic in the coming days.

Drivers are urged to allow extra time for travel and to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating road conditions.

The first flakes are expected to start falling in Edmonton Tuesday afternoon.
