Becerra, a Democrat, was polling ahead of Republican Steve Hilton by a wide margin in the days before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. He served as California attorney general and the U.S. Health and Human Services secretary under the Biden Administration.
Hilton has contributed as a Fox News commentator and served as director of strategy for then-British prime minister David Cameron.
In late October, Becerra sat down to speak about some of his goals if elected. They include a new possible income tax on California’s wealthiest, a healthcare fee for major companies and making changes to the state’s high-speed rail project.
Because state law prohibits people from holding the office for more than two terms, Gov. Gavin Newsom will term out at the end of this year and would not have been able to run again anyway.
Xavier Becerra says, “Yes we did.”
Becerra came up to the stage to chants of “Sí, se puede” after being projected to win California’s governor’s race.
“What a great night to be a Californian. What a great night to be an American, to be the son of immigrants from a union household. To be standing in victory with all of you,” he said.
He said the past two years had been “tough” and “felt like mission: impossible.”
“We knew it was mission: necessary,” he said.
Becerra then led the crowd in chants of “ Sí, se puede.”
“Yes, we can. Yes, we did,” he said.
