The hate crimes unit of the Montreal police department has been assigned to investigate two arson attempts this week on a bakery in the borough of St-Laurent.

Police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said the unit was assigned because the bakery — Mimimelon on St-Louis St.— had been targeted twice in less than 48 hours and “has ties to the Jewish community in St-Laurent.”

The latest arson attempt occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and the fire had already spread inside the building when firefighters arrived at the scene, according to police.

Police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron said there were indications that the fire had been deliberately set and described damage to the building as “considerable.” Investigators will examine local surveillance cameras in an effort to determine the circumstances leading up to the fire.

There were no injuries reported. The same business was the target of an earlier arson attempt at about 11:30 p.m. Monday.
