A diner has revealed how she and her husband stormed out of a ‘pretty low-key’ café after spotting an ‘insane’ price for a ‘basic’ breakfast menu item.
The Sydney woman and her husband visited a café in Manly, only to be stunned when they saw the ‘Big Breakfast’ cost a steep $35.Â
The dish consisted of two hash browns, bacon, egg, sausage, avocado, grilled tomato, toast and mushrooms.
‘$35 for a big breakfast?’ she said in a Reddit thread.
She explained that they had stopped by the café, thinking it was ‘nothing fancy at all’ but were surprised to see the overpriced brekkie item.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the woman added that they had ultimately opted not to dine at the venue.
‘My husband and I thought the place looked cute, it had nice interiors and was packed,’ she said.
‘We walked out after sitting down and seeing how basic the menu was.’
A woman posted a picture Manly cafe menu, highlighting the eye-watering $35 cost of a standard Big Breakfast meal

The comments section of the post quickly attracted hundreds of comments.
Although many agreed with the woman’s outrage about the Big Breakfast price, others felt it hardly should have come as a surprise in a popular beachside suburb.
‘Cafe in Manly. There’s your first mistake,’ one person replied.
‘Eating out is expensive, especially in a beach suburb. Who would have guessed?’
Although they opted not to name and shame the café, one local knew exactly which establishment the woman had visited.
‘It looks cute and there is always a constant crowd of people coming in and out of the place, positioned in a busy section of Manly with a lot of foot traffic around which gets most visitors through the door,’ the local explained.
‘But honestly it just does a wide variety of really ordinary dishes.
They did however recommend checking out many of the other ‘great cafes and restaurants around Manly’.
Although many replies shared the original poster’s outrage about the Big Breakfast price, others felt it hardly should have come as a surprise in a popular beachside suburb like ManlyÂ
The online discussion segued into a broader conversation about how expensive it had become to enjoy a café breakfast meal.
But rather than a tone of outrage, the overall sentiment was that café owners have been forced to increase prices in recent years to cover rising expenses.Â
Unfortunately, it did however mean that the ‘little luxury’ of a regular café breakfast was no longer an option for many people.
‘This is the main reason why I avoid brekkie at cafés,’ read one understanding reply. ‘But it’s not all their fault, weekend penalty rates plus rent, utilities, other expenses have gone up more than inflation.’
‘Most of what you paid goes to rent and labour. Actual food is probably the least of the cost. Make it yourself at home if you can’t afford to pay restaurant prices,’ another agreed.
Another person said: ‘You’ve chosen to go out for breakfast. What did you expect to pay for a big breakfast?… if you wanna save money, eat at home.’
