Another Scottish player, lock Gregor Brown, has been called up by the British and Irish Lions ahead of Tuesday’s match against the First Nations & Pasifika XV.

The recently turned 24-year-old was a second-row starter in Scotland’s 41-12 win over Samoa in Auckland last Friday and will link up with the Lions in Melbourne on Sunday evening.

Andy Farrell caused a stir last week when it was announced that the Scottish trio of Darcy Graham, Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman would join the Lions for the final midweek match of the tour.

Red-carded for two yellows in Scotland’s loss last weekend to Fiji, Graham wasn’t banned for that indiscretion. Instead, he received a warning at his disciplinary and joined the Lions in Brisbane ahead of the opening match in the three-Test series against the Wallabies.

‘Geography Six’ comparisons

Sutherland and Ashman, though, remained with Scotland and were starters against the Samoans.

The inclusion of the Scottish trio ignited comparisons with the infamous ‘Geography Six’, the half-dozen players temporarily called into the Lions as cover by Warren Gatland during the 2017 tour of New Zealand.

The build-up to Saturday’s first Test soon eclipsed last week’s controversy, and the Lions went on to win 27-19.

Joe McCarthy encountered a plantar fasciitis issue in that game, though, a condition affecting the heel and arch of the foot, and this has resulted in the addition of Brown to the squad.

The Glasgow second-row, who also packs down in the back row, now joins fellow Scots Graham, Sutherland and Ashman, England’s Jamie George and Irish pair Thomas Clarkson and Jamie Osborne in the group of seven players added by the Lions across the last week.

A statement read: “The British & Irish Lions travel to Melbourne today [Sunday] ahead of Tuesday’s fixture against the First Nations & Pasifikia and the second Test of the 2025 Qatar Airways Lions Series.

“Scotland and Glasgow Warriors back row Gregor Brown will join the squad in Melbourne this evening. Brown made his Scotland debut against Canada in 2024.

“Brown’s Scotland teammates Rory Sutherland (Lion #840) and Ewan Ashman will also link up with the squad in Melbourne on Sunday.”
