Mount Victoria Tunnel in Wellington is closed this morning as contractors resolve an issue with its fire safety systems.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said the tunnel was closed to traffic in both directions shortly after 7am.
“It will remain closed while work continues identify and fix the problem. There is no estimated time for a resolution, but the tunnel will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so,” an NZTA spokesperson said.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area and use an alternative route.
“Traffic delays and congestion can be expected during the morning peak traffic period.”
Police and three Fire and Emergency NZ crews also attended the scene.
“They have since left the scene as it was deemed to be a false alarm, but the tunnel remains closed,” a FENZ spokesperson said.
