Motorists are facing rush-hour delays across the county this morning following accidents on the A2, M2, M20 and a vehicle fire on the A249.

Part of the M20 has been closed in the London-bound direction following a multi-vehicle collision.

Emergency crews were called to the stretch between Junction 9 for Ashford and Junction 8 for Maidstone Services / Leeds Castle at around 3am.

Kent Police have confirmed the crash involved a lorry and a car.

A spokesman for the force added: “Patrols, fire crews and highways officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported.

“The carriageway was closed to allow highways teams to recover the vehicles and clear debris along with an oil spillage from the carriageway.”

A diversion is in place, with drivers being told to leave the M20 at Junction 9 onto Fougeres way and follow to the roundabout with the A20.

KCC has reported a collision on the A2 London-bound, between Henhurst Road junction and A227 Wrotham Road junction.

It is understood that all traffic was held at around 6.40am while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A police spokesman said they were called at 6.12am to an accident involving a lorry and a car.

Patrols and highways officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported and both vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder. Some congestion still remains.

KCC Highways has also confirmed that one lane was blocked on the A249 Maidstone-bound near Detling, opposite Kent Showground, due to a vehicle fire.

There was queueing traffic for three miles as a result of the blaze, which started at around 5.30am.

A spokeswoman for the fire service added: “Two fire engines attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire using hose reel jets.

“There were no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.”

There were reports of another collision on the M2, London-bound between J5, Sittingbourne, and J4, Gillingham.

This happened at around 6.19am and involved two cars.

Police and highways officers were sent to the scene. No injuries have been reported and both vehicles have been moved onto the hard shoulder.

Just after 8am, traffic in the area, which had been trying to avoid the earlier M20 crash, had started to ease.
