Emerging talent Mattaes Phillipou extends his contract with the Saints.
Emerging talent Mattaes Phillipou has signed a new two-year extension with St Kilda, keeping him in the red, white and black until at least the end of 2028.
Already contracted until the end of 2026, the 20-year-old’s decision further reinforces his belief in the club’s long-term ambitions for success.
Selected with pick No. 10 in the 2022 National Draft, Phillipou quickly became a fan favourite, showcasing his flair and ability to deliver under pressure after playing every game in his debut year.
Despite an interrupted 2025 season following a pre-season leg fracture and subsequent calf injuries that limited him to just seven games, the South Australian has continued to demonstrate his hunger for improvement, particularly through his growth while working his way back via the VFL program.
“Since arriving just three years ago, we’ve seen tremendous growth in Mattaes both as a player and a person,” EGM Football David Misson said.
“His relentless commitment to getting better, whether that’s on the field or in the rehab group, has been second to none.
“We’re very pleased to have him signed on and look forward to what he will continue to bring to the club’s future.”
Phillipou has played 43 games in the red, white and black since debuting in 2023 and remains a vital part of the Saints’ young core.
“I’m really grateful to the club for the extension. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” Phillipou said.
“Although it’s been an up and down start to my career, I’ve never been more hungry and determined to repay the faith shown in me.
“With the energy from the coaches and young core coming through, I’m very excited to be a part of the future here at the club.”
