Manchester City have rolled the dice and allowed influential goalkeeper Ederson to leave on transfer deadline day, bringing in Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.
Ederson, 32, was out of contract next summer and has left City to join Fenerbahce for a reported £12m fee. City have brought in 26-year-old Donnarumma as his replacement, paying £26m to PSG for the Italian.
Donnarumma was announced on Tuesday morning, with Sporting Director Hugo Viana describing the Italian as ‘one of the best in the world in his position.’ Donnarumma said: “This is a club every player in world football would love to join.”
However, not everybody is convinced that Donnarumma will be a success at City, with former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes raising doubts over the ‘really strange’ signing.
Paul Scholes says Manchester United should have signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, gives theory to why PSG let him go
Speaking on The Overlap, former United midfielder Paul Scholes explained why he felt Donnarumma was more suited to United than City. United signed Senne Lammens on deadline day after walking away from interest in Emiliano Martinez in goal.
Scholes said: “I think that’s a really strange signing for Pep. I love the ‘keeper [Donnarumma], I think he’s brilliant and I’d have him at United tomorrow, today, whenever.
“For £40m [reported price] he’s unbelievable. But for Pep you’ve got to almost be able to play in central midfield as a goalkeeper.
“I think that’s the reason [Luis] Enrique is getting rid of him at PSG, because he’s not great with his feet. I just don’t see him as a City goalkeeper.”
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s first words as a Manchester City player, sends message to supporters
After his signing was confirmed, Gianluigi Donnarumma said he has long admired City and was delighted to be playing under Pep Guardiola.
“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola,” Donnarumma said.
“This is a club every player in world football would love to join. I have admired watching Manchester City for many years – so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege.”
Perhaps Donnarumma’s admiration of City and Guardiola is a sign that he is prepared to play in the possession style of his new club, alleviating concerns from the likes of Scholes.
