An ode to the player who made Australia a great cricketing nation – Bob Simpson.

YouTube video

Bob was a great servant to Australian cricket, wearing various hats of a player, captain, coach, national selector, commentator, writer, and mentor.

Bob represented Australia in 62 matches between 1957 and 1978, including 39 matches as a captain. He averaged 46.81 with the bat, and took 71 wickets, all while being one of the greatest slip fielders of his time.

When Australia was going through a lean phase in the mid-80s, Bob was brought in as the Head coach. He focused on making Australia a strong fielding side instantly and led the team with an iron hand.

His ruthless and disciplined approach brought results quickly, as Australia won the 1987 World Cup.

Bob passed away on 16th August 2025, aged 89 years.
