‘THIS IS GROUNDBREAKING’: FRESH DETAILS OF ‘MAMMOTH’ REID EAGLES COUNTER-OFFER AS RIVALS STILL CIRCLE

Further details have emerged on the counter-offers put forward by Harley Reid’s management to West Coast, yet Victorian clubs continue to circle.

And the Reid family, according to veteran reporter Caroline Wilson, have “made it clear they do not want to go to a struggling club” if the star No. 1 pick returned to Victoria.

Reid, who’s tied to the Eagles until the end of 2026, has had contract offers from West Coast on the table since April. But Channel 7 reporter Ryan Daniels reported over the weekend that Reid’s management had approached the Eagles with their own contract extension propositions – in perhaps the best sign yet Reid’s future could be in Perth.

Speaking on Channel 9’s Footy Classified on Monday night, senior AFL Media reporter Cal Twomey elaborated on the “counter offers” presented to the Eagles

“It’s hitting crunch time in the contract decision of Harley Reid at the West Coast Eagles,” Twomey told Footy Classified.

“He’s had contract offers in front of him since April that have come from the Eagles. But in recent weeks, his management have sent counter offers to the Eagles – and a part of that we can detail tonight include a mammoth offer that would be a two-year extension, plus an extension on top of that of another nine years. So an 11-year arrangement.

“This is groundbreaking, really, in terms of what it would mean for West Coast Eagles and Harley Reid as one of the options. We’ve seen this in recent times with the contract of Miles Bergman, who signed a two-year deal and then has an understanding with Port Adelaide that he can sign an extra seven years beyond that. So it’s not unprecedented.

“But it would be the biggest deal in AFL history by some way and it would take him through to the end of 2037 – which is remarkable to think about – if he was to pursue that all the way through.

“This is enormous in terms of the $20 million-plus that would be on the table.”

Twomey, however, said the situation “hasn’t really moved from recent weeks”, meaning clubs hopeful of luring him home to Victoria were still highly active.

“The Eagles are still weighing this up and going through their own negotiation process – and clubs are continuing to hunt him in Victoria,” he said.

“I think Hawthorn are near-on obsessed with Harley Reid in getting him to the club. They want him badly, are willing to go to eight to 10 years at $1.7 million, $1.8 million to get him across the line.”

Speaking on Channel 7’s Agenda Setters, Wilson reported the Reid camp were only keen on a few Victorian-based clubs, should the star midfielder wish to leave WA.

“The player and his family have made it clear they do not want to go to a struggling club,” Wilson told Agenda Setters.

“They’ve got no interest in St Kilda, they’ve got no interest in Melbourne. I’m not sure if they’ve got much interest in Essendon at the moment, but Essendon have no interest in that sort of money.

“They (the Bombers) think that Hawthorn is right in there – and Hawthorn say there have been no meaningful talks – others say that Richmond and Melbourne are having a crack.

“I think West Coast also said to the management ‘we’re not interested in that sort of money’ … but what has happened in the last 24 hours is that I think West Coast have come back to the table – and we’re talking significantly more than $1.5 million a year.”

Eagles coach Andrew McQualter on Monday night stressed Reid was “super invested” and “working really hard” at the Eagles.

Asked if he was pushing for Reid to sign the deal as soon as possible, McQualter cheekily told 7News Perth: “I’ve got a pen in my pocket, I’m heading over right after this.”

‘SEEN AS A LONG SHOT’: LATEST ‘AMBITIOUS PITCH’ TO DANIHER

Melbourne has made a left-field play to try and lure premiership Lion Joe Daniher out of retirement, according to 7News reporter Mitch Cleary.

Daniher retired at the end of last year, calling it quits on an illustrious AFL career after tasting success with the Lions by winning the 2024 premiership.

Reports earlier this month suggested clubs were inquiring as to whether Daniher would make a retirement backflip, with Sydney linked to him.

Speaking on 7News Melbourne on Monday night, Cleary reported that Melbourne was the latest club to make “an ambitious pitch” to Daniher.

“Melbourne and coach Simon Goodwin are attempting to convince Joe Daniher to make a return to the AFL less than 12 months after he called it quits,” Cleary told 7News Melbourne.

“The 31-year-old has spent recent months in Europe and now lives in northern New South Wales, but it hasn’t stopped Goodwin and the Dees making a pitch.

“Goodwin was an assistant coach at the Bombers with Daniher for two years, while Dees forward Jake Melksham previously called Daniher a teammate.

“It is seen as a long shot, however it does highlight just how keen the Demons are to bolster their key forward stocks.”

Daniher won six club goalkicking awards throughout his career and was named All-Australian and Essendon’s best and fairest in 2017.
