Northern Territory police say a woman has died of a suspected snake bite after she collapsed in the regional town of Katherine.

In a statement, police said the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre had received reports at about 1pm that a 40-year-old woman had collapsed at a business on Katherine’s Pearce Street.

Police and St John Ambulance paramedics attended and immediately started CPR on the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said their investigations indicated the woman had suffered a snake bite to her ankle.

They said the woman’s death was not believed to be suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
