Kyler Murray is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL. He’s known for damaging defenses with his legs, and he burst onto the scene following in the footsteps of Baker Mayfield at the University of Oklahoma.

Murray was also known for his baseball skills. Before joining the NFL, he was drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft by the Athletics. Once Murray was selected in the 2019 NFL Draft with the first overall pick by the Cardinals, he became the first player to be drafted in the first round of both leagues.

Murray’s athletic success wasn’t a huge surprise. His family consists of several former athletes. Notably, his dad was an SEC quarterback at Texas A&M, and his cousin also made the NFL a year after Murray did.

Here is more on Murray’s family, including his father, cousin, uncle and more.

Kyler Murray dad: Kevin Murray

Kevin was born in 1964 in Dallas, Texas. He stayed local growing up and went to North Dallas High School where he was the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex Offensive Player of the Year his senior year. Notably, he also played baseball. Like Kyler, his father was drafted in the MLB Draft, except Kevin was selected in the 11th round of the 1982 MLB Draft by the Brewers.

After playing a year of minor league baseball, Kevin played college football for the Aggies down in College Station. He was the QB from 1983-1986 and played in 35 career games. Kevin was a third-team All-American in 1986. He only played in three games as a sophomore after breaking his ankle diving for a first down against Arkansas State. Kevin was granted a medical exemption and went on to play two more seasons. He finished his Aggies career with a 25-6-1 record as the starter, which at the time, made him the winningest quarterback in team history. Kevin is a member of Texas A&M’s Athletic Hall of Fame, being inducted in 1999.

His pro career never panned out due to concerns over his ankle health. He had offseason deals with the 49ers and the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL but retired due to chronic ankle pain. Since his playing career ended, Kevin has worked as a high school quarterback coach and ran the Air 14 Quarterback Academy. Before marrying his wife, Missy, he had two children, Precious and Kevin Murray Jr.

Kyler Murray mom: Missy Murray

Missy is Korean-American. Her mother is from South Korea. Her father is American and served 35 years in the United States Navy and Army. She married Kevin in 1991.

Missy, discussed his obsession with martial artist Bruce Lee, emphasizing his work ethic. She has said that Kyler had a Lee poster on his wall, which also went with a blanket that he took to college. Missy is credited with introducing Kyler to Lee’s work and teachings.

“Missy preaches diversity and cultural awareness in her house and uses Lee as an example of someone who helped break cultural and racial barriers throughout his short life, including by marrying outside his race,” per ESPN. “Missy stoked Kyler’s interest in Lee with books and movies, and now Lee has become an integral part of Kyler’s life. Kyler has become a Lee disciple, using his philosophies, teachings and techniques in football and life to help unclog his brain, calm himself and find perspective.”

Missy says that Kyler reminds her a lot of her father. They both shared a passion for board games, with her father preferring Scrabble, while Kyler likes chess. Not much else is known about Missy. She is reportedly an executive, but is mainly known for being her son’s biggest fan and supporting his football career every step of the way.

Kyler Murray uncle: Calvin Murray

Calvin is Kevin’s younger brother and Kyler’s uncle. He graduated from W.T. White High School in 1989 and was drafted in the first round of that year’s MLB Draft by the Guardians. Rather than going pro, he decided instead to go to the University of Texas. He was again drafted in the first round in the 1992 MLB Draft, this time by the Giants. Calvin notably was the draft pick directly after the Yankees selected Derek Jeter.

He made the United States roster for the 1992 Summer Olympics, but they missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place. Calvin finally made it to the majors in 1999. He played three and a half years with the Giants and half a year with the Rangers. After being out of the majors the entirety of the 2003 season, he got back to the bigs in 2004 in one season with the Cubs before retiring.

Randy Johnson and Calvin Murray’s viral MLB moment

Johnson is a household name among MLB fans. The Big Unit had a long career and is enshrined in Cooperstown, having been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Calvin Murray is not a household name in baseball, and you’d likely think that his claim to fame is just being Kyler’s uncle.

But he has another.

Have you ever seen the viral clip of Johnson pitching and hitting a bird when the ball was travelling to the plate? Murray was the batter.

Originally, Duvernay committed to play at Baylor out of high school but switched to Texas.

Duvernay developed into a prominent returner and was named a First-team All-Pro in 2021, the same year he made his first Pro Bowl.
