Capital Region (WRGB) — As the new school year approaches, Amanda Keil, Co-Head of Brown School, shared essential tips to help parents and students prepare for a smooth transition back to school.
Keil emphasized the importance of discussing what to expect during the school day, including arrival, classes, lunch, recess, and dismissal. “Go over what the school day will look like,” she said, adding that answering children’s questions can help ease their worries.
To ensure a calm first morning, Keil advised allowing extra time to avoid feeling rushed. “Keep goodbyes short, positive, and reassuring,” she said.
With schools banning cell phones, Keil recommended creating a communication plan. “Let your child know how you will reach them and vice versa,” she said.
Involving children in preparing their supplies can also be beneficial. “Let your child help pack their backpack and organize supplies,” Keil said, suggesting that labeling belongings can prevent lost items.
Finally, establishing after-school plans is crucial. “Let your child know who will pick them up and where,” Keil said, noting that having a clear plan can ease anxiety.
These tips aim to help families start the school year with confidence and ease.
