Jack Debreczeni has returned to Sydney, signing a deal with the NSW Waratahs following a brief stint with the NCT Brumbies.
The 32-year-old fly-half hails from West Harbour Rugby Club and is a former student of the Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, so will be returning to his city of birth.
Many will recognise him from the impressive First Nations and Pasifika team that almost beat the British & Irish Lions at Melbourne in July.
Excitement meets experience
Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Debreczeni said: “The Waratahs have a rich history of success. The opportunity to play for them excites me. Playing in front of family and friends is also a bonus.”
Having travelled the professional circuit for over ten years now, Debreczeni is aware of the experience he can bring to the squad.
“Any knowledge I can impart onto a young and exciting backline … I’ll do my best to help with their growth on and off the field,” he said.
NSW Waratahs Head Coach Dan McKellar is just as excited about the return of Debreczeni to the city.
“It’s a really nice story to see Jack returning home, with his background at school and club rugby where he started at West Harbour,” McKellar said.
A versatile playmaker weighing over 100kg, Debreczeni is known for his game management, calm decision-making, and strong kicking game.
“Jack is an experienced player who adds real quality and strength and depth in a very important position,
“Off the back of years of experience, Jack is very calm, he has a very good skill set; and he has an ability to manage a game, as shown by how he performed for the First Nations Pasifika team.”
Debreczeni has also been impressed by the NSW Waratahs’ progress in their first year under McKellar.
“I feel Dan is creating an environment that delivers really tough, robust rugby players, and that was seen through a lot of their performances this year,” Debreczeni said.
Fan reaction
Waratahs supporters appear keen to welcome their new man, with one person on social media saying: “Great signing – a safe pair of hands. Will be to the Tahs as JOC was to the Crusaders, while another added: “Always underrated. Smart player with a massive boot. Just what the Waratahs need.”
