Manchester United reportedly agree personal terms with Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck ahead of a potential return to Old Trafford.
Manchester United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck ahead of a potential return to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.
The Red Devils allegedly considered making a move for Welbeck over the summer after missing out on Liam Delap to Chelsea, but the club’s minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe was not keen on offering a two-year deal to the attacker.
As a result, Welbeck remained with the Seagulls, and the 34-year-old has made three Premier League appearances in the early stages of the 2025-26 campaign.
The former England international’s contract at the Amex is due to expire next summer, though, and according to FootballTransfers, Man United are ready to reignite their interest in January.
The report claims that Welbeck has already agreed personal terms with Man United, with a deal on summer transfer deadline day discussed, but Brighton could not bring in a replacement in time.
Man United ‘eye Welbeck return’ in January window
Brighton would allegedly be open to selling Welbeck in January, as it would be their last chance to secure a fee for the experienced forward, who arrived at the Amex from Watford in 2020.
Welbeck has scored 37 goals and registered 16 assists in 164 appearances for Brighton, including 10 Premier League goals during the 2024-25 campaign.
In total, Welbeck has 77 Premier League goals to his name during spells at Man United, Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton, while he has played in England’s top flight on 366 occasions.
The forward came through the youth system at Old Trafford and went on to represent the Red Devils first team between 2008 and 2014, scoring 20 goals and registering nine assists in 92 appearances.
Should Man United re-sign Welbeck?
Welbeck has got better with age, with his understanding of the game and ability to bring the best out of his teammates on full display during his time at Brighton.
Man United are now short of centre-forward options, with Rasmus Hojlund leaving for Napoli; Benjamin Sesko has been signed, but Matheus Cunha is currently featuring through the middle.
Cunha could be facing a spell out with the hamstring issue that he suffered against Burnley, though, which leaves 17-year-old Chido Obi as the only serious competition for Sesko.
Man United could certainly do with adding another player in that area of the field, and Welbeck on a short-term deal makes a lot of sense, as he knows what it takes to operate and indeed win at Old Trafford, lifting six trophies during his time with the 20-time English champions, including the Premier League title.
