The Free State Cricket Union and Knights Cricket family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Petri Watson, who will forever be remembered as the heartbeat of Free State Cricket.

Petri joined the Union in 2009 as a ticket office administrator. Over the years, her dedication, professionalism, and love for both the game and its people saw her rise through the ranks. Most recently, she served as PA to the CEO and Events Coordinator, roles in which she gave her all to ensure the smooth running of the Union, the Knights, and countless events that touched lives across the Free State and beyond.

Her loss leaves a void that words can hardly capture. To her colleagues, Petri was far more than a co-worker—she was a friend, mentor, and sister. Her warmth, laughter, and unwavering commitment made her a source of strength in the workplace and an irreplaceable part of the cricket community’s journey.

Reflecting on this tragic loss, Johan van Heerden, CEO of Free State Cricket Union, said:

“What a sad day for Free State Cricket. Petri was that person who got into the hearts of everyone that worked with her. Her competence, her energy, the love she had for the game and the players. I cannot imagine the world without her. Petri, thank you for the role you played for Free State Cricket Union and myself in the last 16 years. You surely are going to be missed by all in the cricket fraternity. Our condolences to Allan and Watson family.”

Xander Snyders, President of Free State Cricket Union, added:

“It is with shock and great sadness to lose Petri. She was a pillar of strength in her work at Free State Cricket Union, always friendly and willing to assist. On behalf of the Board and Members’ Council, our heartfelt condolences to the Watson family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
