Collingwood star Jordan De Goey will be sweating on the AFL’s Match Review after his bump that made head contact in his side’s big qualifying final win over Adelaide on Thursday night.

And De Goey isn’t the only big name in hot water after the Pies’ 24-point victory at Adelaide Oval.

Josh Worrell will face a similar verdict for his bump on Magpies forward Lachie Schultz – with fears both the Crows defender and De Goey, whose bump rocked Worrell earlier in the contest, could face one-match bans due to a recent precedent.

“Certainly the De Goey hit on Worrell – only because the comparison to a one-week suspension three weeks ago is so fresh,” Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph reported of the third quarter hit.

“He elects to bump – he doesn’t contest the ball. He makes clear head high contact.”

While stating the contact appears low impact, Ralph pointed to Cats big man Shannon Neale’s recent ban for a similar hit.

“So Jake Lloyd gets hit by Shannon Neale in Round 23 – it was assessed as medium impact and it was one week,” Ralph said.

“Jake Lloyd gets up pretty quickly, he plays on – if you’re lining up those two incidents you’re saying how does one become a week and one become a fine?

“Michael Christian isn’t someone who’s going to say because it’s a final I’m going to let him off.

“I think it’s more likely to be a one week (ban).

“I believe in my heart of hearts it should be low impact and be a fine. I just line up those two incidents and think they are both so similar.

“I hope for Jordan’s sake this is only a fine and he’s able to play in a preliminary final – but we’ll wait.”

Three-time premiership Tiger Jack Riewoldt believes the intent of De Goey could be enough to separate the incident from a similar fate to Neale.

“My opinion is the Shannon Neale one wasn’t in play; it was off the ball, a couple of metres away and clearly he was going to shepherd to bump. I do think De Goey is making some play on the ball, whether it’s to come in and shepherd, he’s close enough here,” Riewoldt argued.

“This will be the biggest talking point when the MRO findings come out.

“There is the moment to go down to the ball – he is still high enough to collect Worrell in the head.”

Ralph then described Worrell’s bump on Schultz from the fourth term as a “very similar incident”.

“He certainly gets him maybe with more of a forearm. He throws his arms back – he knows he’s made some high contact,” Ralph said.

“Again, I think that’s more of a glancing blow. I think it’s more of a low level fine, couple of thousand bucks down to a thousand with a guilty plea.

“They are really line-ball incidents and what happens in Round 23 has a direct precedent three weeks later even though we don’t feel like those should be suspensions.”

Riewoldt said the loss of either player would be a massive out for their respective clubs.

“There’s big stakes to play at the MRO this week,” he said.

AFL great Jason Dunstall had described De Goey as “one of the best players on the ground” in the qualifying final win.

“What also stood out to me was his pace around the contest – they made the Adelaide midfield in particular look very slow,” Dunstall praised.

“He’s obviously fit … Even in tight contests, look at the pace! He can burst away!

“He led them a merry dance.”
