Two women have died after being struck by a car on a freeway on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway at Craigieburn — about 45 minutes north of the Melbourne CBD — just after 7.30pm following reports two people had been hit.

Both women, who are yet to be identified, were taken to hospital but have since died.

Investigations are ongoing but Victoria Police believe the pair may have been outside their vehicle assisting an injured animal when the incident occurred.
