A young male sperm whale, approximately four meters long and weighing around one ton, washed up dead on the northern coast of Samos island on Monday.
According to the organization Archipelagos, this specific area of the Aegean Sea is one of the most critical migration routes for these mammals, almost throughout the year.
“Unfortunately, this is not the first time a young sperm whale has been found dead in the area, which is concerning given that the species’ normal lifespan is up to 70 years,” said the organization.
A necropsy was performed by specialized veterinarians and marine biologists. Furthermore, samples will be sent to specialized laboratories to determine the exact causes of death.
Human intervention has been ruled out as a cause of death.
