Is it a picture frame? A board game? A portable advertising board? Is it a TV? It’s everything, as LG’s portable StanByMe TV concept grows in design.
You’ve probably never considered carrying your TV with you, and the reason is clear: why would you; it’s a TV, and hardly portable, and you have a phone, possibly a tablet, and maybe a laptop. You have screens for days, and the choices are clear.
But what you don’t have is a large screen, something that using a TV provides.
Even the smallest of TVs are bigger than the biggest tablets, devices that typically max out at 14 inches, while the biggest laptop maxes at 17 or 18 inches. There are just limitations to what a tablet or laptop screen size is going to hit, and if you need something bigger, your choices are slim.
LG has been working on an idea that could just change that, evolving one of its more unusual concepts to come out of the company’s R&D labs in the past few years.
Back in 2023, LG launched a portable TV on a stand with a funny (maybe clever) name: the StanbyMe. It’s a TV on a stand, get it?
The concept married a 27 inch TV on a stand, and was similar but different to another variation on the theme: the StanbyMe Go, a TV on a stand in a briefcase made to take with you.
In 2025, however, LG may be merging the ideas, offering a 27 inch TV that not only fits on a stand, but can be taken to go and used on a wall, giving it a look and design that feels also like it’s working to be a competitor to Samsung’s The Frame, the lifestyle art range of Samsung TVs.
This year, the StanbyMe 2 will offer a 27 inch touchscreen with a built-in 4 hour battery, support for webOS and apps, HDMI, Apple AirPlay, Google Chromecast, and a Quad HD resolution of 2560×1440. You won’t find 4K here, but the QHD resolution is better than Full HD, and you probably also don’t need 4K on such a small screen.
What the StanbyMe 2 aims to offer distinct of just another TV, however, is flexibility. It’ll work as a TV on a stand, but if you take it off the stand, it will also work as a flat board game system because of its touchscreen, and you can hang it on the wall as a piece of art, and you can showcase signs on it, as well.
LG will also include an app for drawing, some games, and some preloaded visuals, as well as a virtual sound system, using a Dolby Atmos 9.1.2 system with support for Dolby Vision HDR, as well.
“We recognise the growing demand for technology that adapts to modern viewing habits and flexible living environments and that’s why we engineered the StanbyMe 2,” said Tony Brown, General Manager of the Entertainment and Content Business at LG in Australia and New Zealand.
“It delivers practical portability while maintaining the premium viewing experiences LG is known for,” he said. “It’s designed to be a versatile companion for modern homes – a flexible screen solution that easily integrates into different aspects of the day, ensuring entertainment is both convenient and high-quality.”
LG’s second-gen StanbyMe TV will also come with a rather TV-like price, though unlike most IFA 2025 announcements, this one at least has a release date. As such, Australians can expect it available later this month for $2199.
