Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) retained the red jersey of the Vuelta a España after the breakaway ruled the day Thursday and the GC riders hit “pause.”
Vingegaard and his closest threats João Almeida (UAE Emirates-XRG) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) crossed the line together after Visma-Lease a Bike locked down the peloton ahead of a wildly difficult double-header in Asturias.
The controversy-stalked Spaniard Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates-XRG) was first across the line on the Vuelta’s 12th stage into Los Corrales de Buelna.
The 22-year-old attacked out of the breakaway with Javier Romo (Movistar) in the final climb of the stage and dominated the sprint.
Ayuso has now won twice at the Vuelta, taking his team’s tally to an incredible five. The Emirati crew also won twice with Jay Vine, and in the team time trial.
There were no major changes at the top of GC except for one unexpected classification raid.
Bruno Armirail (Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale) jumped a whopper nine spots to sixth overall after he fought his way into the breakaway group.
Vingegaard now takes his red jersey into 48 hours of climbing agony in the Asturias. More than 8,000m of climbing, including mountaintop finishes on Angliru on Friday and Farrapona on Saturday, await.
Expect significant GC carnage.
