Jannik Sinner has suffered an injury scare during his US Open semifinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime, with the World No. 1 departing the court for a medical timeout after losing the second set to the Canadian. The defending champion, 24, took the first set 6-1, but faced a fight in the second as Auger-Aliassime leveled the game to one set apiece 6-3.

However, upon returning to his chair to prepare for the third set, Sinner appeared to be in considerable discomfort with his right arm. A physio saw Sinner before returning to the locker room for further evaluation. He returned, running down the tunnel and back onto the court.

Sinner is searching for a fifth consecutive Singles Slam final appearance, dating back to his US Open win last year. The Italian has won three of the last five majors and could make it four in five should he make Sunday’s final against rival Carlos Alcaraz and retain the title.

Alcaraz booked his spot in Sunday’s final with a straight-set win over 24-time Slam winner Novak Djokovic in Friday’s early semifinal. The Spaniard sent Djokovic packing with a decisive 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory.

A Sinner-Alcaraz Slam final would also be a consecutive third, with the pair first meeting this year at Roland-Garros. Alcaraz got the better of Sinner on the day, winning a five-set thriller in Paris.

However, Sinner returned the favor at Wimbledon, winning his second Slam of 2025, adding to his Australian Open triumph earlier this year. Djokovic is the last man on the Singles circuit to win a Slam outside of Sinner and Alcaraz (2023 US Open).

Alcaraz is looking forward to meeting Sinner again, should he get past Auger-Aliassime. The pair’s dominance has seen one of the sport’s best, Djokovic, concede that he may never be able to keep up with them in a best-of-five Slam match again.

“I think he, in the way — I think physically he has improved a lot, and that’s obviously,” Alcaraz said about Sinner. “I mean, it wasn’t a secret.

DON’T MISS…

“He has spoken about the physical conditions that he has to improve, and I think the last year, the last two years, he has improved a lot physically. You know, his matches are really demanding physically that he’s able to play at his 100% during two, three, four hours, and I think that’s the biggest improvement he has made in the last years.”

The final will also be played in front of President Donald Trump. The 79-year-old is expected to return to New York for the US Open’s final game.

“Well, I mean, I think that the tournaments — or it is a privilege for the tournaments having the president from every country just to support the tournament, to support tennis, and to support the match,” Alcaraz said.

“For me, playing in front of him… so, to be honest, I will try not to be focused, and I will try not to think about it. I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it, but I think, you know, attending the tennis match, it’s great for tennis to have the president into the final.”
