Liam Ryan picks the Saints as his future home

St Kilda’s busy off-season has continued, with West Coast small forward Liam Ryan declaring he wants to be at the Saints in 2026.

The 28-year-old is contracted to the Eagles, so a trade would have to be facilitated to make it work.

Ryan’s decision means he joins Jack Silvagni and Tom De Koning in announcing they want to be at St Kilda next year, adding to the good news that Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera will be staying at the club for another two years.

It will mean some players will have to be shifted out, with word around the agent traps that Geelong is looking heavily at ruckman Rowan Marshall.

Now into some news, and it will come as no surprise to anyone that the AFL has admitted the umpire got it wrong on Friday night when Cam Rayner was handed a free kick in the goalsquare against the Cats.

Mark O’Connor was penalised after he gave a small nudge to Rayner in the back, with Rayner toppling to the ground in scenes that had footy pundits in unison about how farcical it was.

The Cats had been lining up for goal at the time, so it was essentially a 150m penalty.

What might be news to some is that the AFL did tick off the free kick against Zach Guthrie that came immediately after, despite Rayner similarly hitting the ground a little too easily.

Ultimately it didn’t cost the Cats, who moved straight through to the prelim comfortably, but it wasn’t a great look on an otherwise cracking night of footy.

GWS Giants vs Hawthorn at Sydney Showground from  3:15pm AESTFremantle vs Gold Coast at Perth Stadium from 7:35pm AEST; 5:35pm AWST

Whoever wins carries on in 2025, whoever loses is done and dusted.

The winner of the Giants and Hawks clash will head to Adelaide on Friday night to face the Crows, with the winner of that game then playing the Cats in a prelim at the MCG.

The winner of the Dockers and Suns clash will head to Brisbane on Saturday night to face the Lions, with the winner of that game then playing the Magpies in a prelim at the MCG.
