Geraint Thomas finished his race career today as the Tour of Britain ended in his home city of Cardiff, and here’s the Pinarello Dogma F he was riding, complete with a Welsh dragon on the head tube and a list of some of his greatest achievements – including victory in the 2018 Tour de France – listed on the top tube.

Wow! Where do you start with Geraint Thomas? He has been a fixture of top-level British bike racing for two decades. Rather than running through a full list of his achievements, let’s just take a quick look at the wins highlighted on the top tube of the Pinarello Dogma F that he rode in his last professional race.

Not a bad little haul, that.

He has also won the Tour de Suisse, E3 Harelbeke, multiple world championships, Commonwealth Games, and he’s been national champ in both road race and time trial. Aside from his Tour de France win, he’s finished second and third too, finished the race in 13 of his 14 starts since 2007 – including that time (2013) when he rode the whole thing with a broken pelvis after crashing on the first stage. He’s been on the Giro d’Italia podium a couple of times too.

Now aged 39, Geraint has drawn his race career to a close and is moving into management at Ineos Grenadiers, the team that has been his home since 2010 (called Team Sky back then). Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but this really is the end of an era. There will be no G in the pro peloton in 2026. Doesn’t seem right, does it?

But this isn’t the time to get all misty-eyed and start wondering where our youth went. We’re here to look at the Pinarello Dogma F that Geraint Thomas rode in his last race.

Rather than Ineos Grendaiers’ usual orange and black colour scheme, Geraint’s bike was decorated in white, red and green, the colours of the Welsh flag. The logos, dragon emblem, stem, and other details are in gold. He’s a multi-time Olympic and World Championships gold medalist, after all, so why not? They can’t touch you for it.

We particularly like the attention to detail with the little Welsh flag on the back of the seatpost to indicate saddle height; much more classy than a simple line with a Sharpie.

The bike under there is the updated Pinarello Dogma F that Ineos Grenadiers has been using in various forms over the past few years. The latest version features the head tube “nose” shape that Pinarello originally introduced on the Dogma F8 back in 2014. It’s now narrower than previously, “with a more streamlined design to improve the frontal aero penetration”, according to the Italian brand.

Pinarello has also introduced an elliptical fork steerer tube and new headset bearings to allow for the narrower head tube with the latest version of the Dogma F, and the ends of the thru axles are enclosed on both the fork and the frame to improve the aero performance and the aesthetics.

When we reviewed the Pinarello Dogma F Dura-Ace here on road.cc, Stu Kerton said, “Subtle tweaks have honed the performance, handling and efficiency to a level that it really can’t be faulted,” he said.

Granted, there was the small matter of a £13,000 price tag, but apart from that, there was very little negative to say. A stunning bike.

Like that review bike, Ineos Grenadiers’ Dogma Fs are built up with Shimano’s top-level Dura-Ace groupset.

Those are 60mm-deep Dura-Ace C60 wheels fitted with Continental Grand Prix 5000 TT TR tubeless tyres

The one-piece handlebar is a Talon Ultra Fast from Pinarello’s Most in-house component brand, coming with a 7° flare so that the drops are a little wider than the hoods position for extra stability.

The saddle is a Prologo Nago R4 PAS, meaning that it has carbon rails and a pressure-relieving open channel down the centre.

The verdict on this bike?

“I’ve ridden some incredible Pinarellos over the years… But this might just be my favourite,” Geraint Thomas said on Instagram.

Okay, you probably don’t take much notice of what pro riders say about their bikes because they pretty much have to say good things, but this one really does look a bit special, doesn’t it? You might as well go out in style.
