Gráinne Walsh has joined the O’Rourke sisters, Lisa and Aoife, in progressing to a medal fight at the World Boxing Championship in Liverpool after winning her last-16 tie in style.

The Tullamore Olympian put on a masterful display in her 65kg bout against Spain’s Mariana Soto Torres, winning 5-0, and outclassing her opponent in every facet.

Walsh will box for a medal against China’s Yang Liu – the Paris silver medallist at the weight division – in Wednesday’s evening session.

Unfortunately for Jack Marley, his tournament ended as he lost a majority decision.

Seeded third, the heavyweight – who was also a Paris Olympian – lost his fight with Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Togambay on a 4-1 result.

Elsewhere, a late point deduction was given against Jennifer Lehane as she suffered a unanimous-decision defeat to Yoseline Perez from the USA. The fight was tight but the point deduction and a well-placed body shot by Perez settled the decision.

Meanwhile, Dean Clancy will contest his last-16 bout against Georgia’s Lasha Guruli in Tuesday’s evening session, on a big night for Irish boxing as Lisa O’Rourke boxes for another World medal.

The Roscommon woman takes on Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti, the top seed in her 70kg division.

Patsy Joyce (55kg) and Brian Kennedy (85kg) will also be between the ropes on Tuesday.
