Sir Michael Caine may be stepping out of retirement to return to an old role of his.

The 92-year-old is said to be returning to acting for a sequel of The Last Witch Hunter alongside his longtime friend Vin Diesel.

According to Variety, the production of the sequel is currently being fast-tracked by Lionsgate and Diesel’s production banner, One Race Films.

Caine’s involvement in the upcoming film has not yet been finalised, but it is expected that he will reprise his role as Dolan, a priest who aided Diesel’s warrior Kaulder as he battled a plague in the fictional world.

The film, a somewhat passion project of Diesel’s, grossed just $27 million in North America but drew better commercial success overseas, bringing in $119 million in international revenue, per Variety.

Production of the sequel comes a decade after the original film was released in 2015.

For the role, Caine will return to starring alongside Diesel with whom he has been friends for decades.

The acting veteran revealed in his memoir Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over: My guide to Life that he and The Fast and the Furious star “first met at a dinner party about 30 years ago”, per People.

They became fast friends with Caine noting that Diesel had been “going through some tough times” when they met.

“I think perhaps it made an impression upon him to be embraced and treated with love,” he added. “Anyway, we’ve been great friends ever since.

Earlier this month, the duo were spotted spending time together in London.

Caine’s ancitipated return to the film comes two years after the industry icon announced his retirement from acting in 2023.

The two-time Oscar winner made the announcement on BBC Radio 4s Best of Today podcast at the time.

“I keep saying I’m going to retire,” said Caine, adding: “Well, I am now.”

He went on to confirm that The Great Escaper, which was released weeks before his annoucement, marked his final acting gig.

“I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m goint to get now are old men – 90-year-old mean, or maybe 85, you know – and I thought well I might as well leave with all this,” he added.

“I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?”

It appears the allure of returning to his character was enough to draw the legenday actor out of retirement.

Caine began his acting career on the stage in the early 1950s, before making his movie debut in 1956.

What followed was an acting career that spanned eight decades.

Caine was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1993, and he was knighted in 2000.
