King Frederik and Queen Mary have thanked the hundreds of staff who have worked across their various summer expeditions on board the royal family’s yacht.

A party was held on board Dannebrog, officially bringing an end to what is known as the summer sailing season.

The Danish King and Queen attended the event on Wednesday as the ship was docked in Copenhagen’s harbour before it is moved elsewhere for maintenance during the winter months.

It’s been a busy year for the royal yacht, having sailed to the Faroe Islands in June before embarking on the final summer cruise through the municipalities of Frederikshavn, Thisted, Læsø and Samsø.

When the King and Queen visited the Faroe Islands, which are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, they were joined by their youngest daughter Princess Josephine.

Their most recent summer cruise to Denmark’s northern regions took place in late August and saw the King and Queen warmly welcomed to each town with huge crowds and much fanfare.

For the farewell party overnight, Queen Mary was dressed in a white broderie lace dress by Temperley London that she has had in her wardrobe since 2017 and a cropped Prada jacket from 2013, in keeping with her tendency to dress in a mixture of old and new pieces.

Her new addition, this time, was a navy and white hat from Canopy Bay, by Australia’s Deborah Hutton. Mary has four hats from the brand, which she has worn steadily across the warmer months.

The nautical theme extended to navy accessories including heels and a clutch and white pearls by Dulong.

King Frederik wore his naval dress uniform.

King Frederik and Queen Mary met crowds at Nordre Toldbod, two pavilions on Copenhagen Harbour that are reserved for the royal family’s use, before transferring onto the royal yacht docked close by.

Once on board they officially bid farewell to the crew including new conscripts who had been training on the vessel with the Royal Danish Navy since April.

A reception was held in the evening inside the King and Queen’s home, Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg.

The Royal Yacht Dannebrog serves as the official and private residence for King Frederik and Queen Mary when they are on summer cruises in home waters or on official visits overseas.

The ship is usually docked at Holmen, on Copenhagen’s harbour, meaning royal fans can see the vessel when it is not in use by the royal family. The location is a short walk from the palaces of Amalienborg where the King and Queen live.

In the ship’s 93-year history, it has visited most of the ports in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, as well as ports in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and on the east coast of the United States.

Dannebrog is one of the world’s two remaining royal yachts. The other is the Norwegian Royal Yacht Norge, since the British Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997.
