McLaren’s team orders at Monza caused quite the stir, and former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has shared his opinion on whether or not Lewis Hamilton would have considered obeying them.
Oscar Piastri was told to concede his position to Lando Norris at the Italian Grand Prix after a pit stop error saw the British driver fall behind his teammate in the final stint of the race.
Before the debacle unfolded, Norris allowed Piastri to pit before him, putting himself at risk of his teammate undercutting him in the first place.
Norris finished the race in second place, behind Max Verstappen and ahead of his title rival Piastri. The fallout from the orders came on social media, with F1 fans sending a clear message to McLaren about what they thought of the ordeal.

Juan Pablo Montoya thinks the current Lewis Hamilton would have obeyed McLaren’s team orders
Speaking on the latest episode of MontoyAS on YouTube, Montoya shared what he thinks the reaction of previous F1 champions, including Hamilton, would have been if they were in the position of Piastri at the Italian Grand Prix.
“Oscar had the opportunity not to let him pass. Oscar was given an order.” Montoya started, before theorising, “If you had given that order to Max Verstappen, Max wouldn’t have given back the position.
“He wouldn’t even consider it. No, he wouldn’t. If you give that order to [Sebastian] Vettel, Vettel doesn’t give back the position.
“If you give it to Lewis, maybe nowadays, maybe not before. If you give it to Fernando [Alonso], he wouldn’t have given back the position either. It depends on your position.
In Hamilton’s previous title fights, on a few occasions, he found himself on the other side of team orders, with Valtteri Bottas having to concede positions to the British driver in order to help his championship challenge.
However, they came at points where Bottas was out of title contention, and Hamilton was the only Silver Arrow left who could win the championship, which he more often than not did.
Sky F1 pundit Karun Chandhok believes Piastri obeyed to save himself from Hamilton’s previous mistake at McLaren where he ignored team orders, leading to tension at the team between himself and Alonso.

Oscar Piastri is still in charge of the F1 championship with eight rounds remaining
The Australian driver still holds a 31-point advantage over Norris in the F1 standings after the European leg of the season came to a close with the Italian Grand Prix.
Piastri pulled off a ‘wonder move’ against Charles Leclerc in the opening stages of the race at Monza, showcasing the raw talent of the 24-year-old, which can be seen as one of the reasons he is leading the standings at this point in time.

Despite pulling off the rare move on the Italian tarmac, Piastri lost a lot of time in the battle with Leclerc, and it cost him in trying to catch up with Norris, who was further up the road locked in a battle with eventual winner, Max Verstappen.
Whilst Norris did eat into his lead by three points with the result at Monza, the British driver will need more of a points swing in future races to be within a chance of overturning his McLaren teammate’s current lead.
