Brighton and Hove Albion have announced their split with technical director David Weir, amid Manchester United’s ongoing consideration of a proposed approach for Carlos Baleba.
Weir, who has previously been part of the backroom teams at Rangers, Aston Villa and Brentford, joined the Seagulls in 2018 as loan manager. After holding that role for four years, the former Scotland international transitioned to the position of technical assistant for nearly half a year before ultimately assuming the role of technical director.
His primary responsibilities at the club included overseeing player recruitment, and he played a significant role in Brighton’s signing of Baleba in 2023. However, Brighton owner Tony Bloom stated in a release that the Premier League club is now seeking a new direction.
“David has served our club well, but we now wish to refresh our technical area with new leadership and direction,” Bloom said. “I’d like to thank David for everything he has done for us, and to wish him well for the future.”
Brighton CEO Paul Barber also expressed his sentiments: “I have greatly enjoyed working with David over these past eight years, and have appreciated his support and hard work throughout this period. I wish David all the best going forward.”

Weir’s exit marks a significant change in Brighton’s recruitment department, which could impact United’s strategy for bringing Baleba to Old Trafford.
At present, there are no indications that Weir’s departure will interfere with the Reds’ plans, but it could result in the Seagulls taking a tougher stance on transfer negotiations.
During the summer transfer window, United were quoted a staggering £100million to sign Baleba, a figure that was unthinkable given the amount they had already spent on players.
The Manchester Evening News has learned that United were unperturbed about missing out on the 21-year-old as they were prepared to wait until 2026 to finalise a deal if necessary.
So far this season, Baleba has continued his development – featuring in all three Premier League matches before the international break. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson have also been linked with United in recent weeks as they begin to prepare for the January transfer window and beyond.
