A boy was left needing surgery after an alleged deliberate hit-and-run in Melbourne.

Police were told a group of people were walking along Margaret Street in Werribee when a car mounted the footpath and drove at them at about 3.45pm on Sunday, August 10.

The car hit a 15-year-old Wyndham boy who was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries that required surgery.

The car was driven away at high speed.

Investigators believe the car was an early 2000s model Honda Civic with false number plates, a silver body, and a gold front bumper.

It had two black stripes on the bonnet and minor red markings or panel damage to its back right side.

Police have released an image of the car in hopes of identifying the driver.
