A LACK of good-quality tyres was the common complaint at the first of Supercars’ two all-in tests this year, but despite a willingness to enact change, Tim Edwards says the matter has not been raised by teams since.

That sets the stage for more of the same qualms at next month’s fieldwide pre-enduro test at Queensland Raceway.

That will take place on August 12, two days after the Ipswich Super440 wraps up, with co-driver mileage and endurance procedures set to be at the fore of teams’ run plans.

Winding back the clock to February for the Sydney Motorsport Park pre-season hitout, tyres or the lack thereof were the talking point.

Cam Waters, for example, had said: “Until probably two o’clock I was wasting my time until we put a good tyre on. I’m all for less practice but when we do go testing, we need to make sure we have got a good tyre bank.”

Bryce Fullwood wrote off even more of his SMP test: “Everyone didn’t have very many tyres to run on, so we didn’t really get to run on the tyre until probably 3:30… so it made it a little bit difficult trying to tune the car in on really old tyres.”

Reigning champion Will Brown echoed those sentiments: “There’s not a lot to take from three quarters of today.”

When quizzed on the matter at the time, Supercars general manager of motorsport Edwards had this to say: “I have absolutely no problem with more tyres.

“If the teams would all like more tyres, then they probably should provide response when they’re given the draft of how many tyres. Ultimately we’re guided by them.

“We just need to think about do we need some more for Queensland Raceway? And I have no doubt the teams will maybe come to the Commission with a proposal and we’ll talk to Kev (Fitzsimons of Dunlop) and see what he’s got.

“If they all agree that they want more tyres for testing, absolutely no problem at all for us. But it’s really a team decision because it’s their money they’re spending.”

V8 Sleuth recently put the question to Edwards once more…

“Nobody has raised it since then,” he said after the conclusion of the Townsville 500.

So, it will simply be a matter of what tyres each team and each crew has banked to test on.

“In answer to your question, there has been no changes to the rules. The teams have got their tyre banks, they have been accumulating tyres as the season has gone on,” Edwards reiterated.
