He’s viewed by some pundits as one of the leading local chances in this year’s Caulfield Cup, but Half Yours has a battle on his hands to even make it to the starting gates.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained stayer, who shot to prominence with a dominant win in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) in July, was allocated 51kgs by Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper on Tuesday.
The horse currently sits at No.47 in the Order Of Entry.
“Typically, at this stage, you’d want to be in the top 40 in the order for the Caulfield Cup,” RV’s David Hegan told The Verdict podcast.
“But every year is different.
“That may change, as we get closer to the race, but if it’s the case… then the only way he can really get into the Caulfield Cup is to win the Metrop and get a penalty.”
At the time of writing, Half Yours was equal favourite with some bookmakers to win the Metropolitan Handicap on October 4 and is also prominent in some Caulfield Cup markets.
Hegan ran through all of his big weight calls on The Verdict podcast, also sharing the names of a couple of horses that worried him most, heading towards the feature staying events.
“You can only handicap them on what they’ve done, not what you think they’re going to do,” he said.
