Robert Irwin has swapped his khakis for sequins, tearing up the dance floor on US Dancing With The Stars.

The wildlife warrior performed the jive with his dance partner Witney Carson, receiving the highest score of the night and praise from judge Derek Hough.

“That was the best first dance I’ve ever seen on the show,” he said of Irwin and Carson’s closing performance.

And back in Australia, Irwin’s efforts were applauded by someone else who knows a thing or two about dancing.

Paul Mercurio starred in the iconic Aussie film, Strictly Ballroom and also served as a judge on the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars.

“The jive is incredibly difficult and watching that performance, he was so confident,” Mercurio told Today.

“Some people who come on Dancing With The Stars, you can see that they aren’t going to be very good and most of them haven’t had dance training. I don’t believe Robert has, but you’d be surprised to learn that because he certainly looks like he has experience.

“He moves so beautifully, he was so fluid and confident in his body and you can’t teach that, it’s just something you have intrinsically and he’s got it in spades.”
