The Vancouver Canucks are missing some key pieces entering this NHL season, the biggest one being their urgent need for a second line center, a need that has been addressed by GM Patrick Allvin. The Canucks will most likely start season without anyone supporting Elias Pettersson up the middle. The lack of depth of the top-six forwards already addressedmore than once this offseason.Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin had quite a busy summer, with the first big move he made being just days before the NHL Entry Draft when he acquired Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers to beef up the team’s top-six and add some more scoring depth.”-Jaxon
Vancouver Canucks are in urgent need of a second line center
“At the end of last season, the Vancouver Canucks’ president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford, was crystal clear about his team’s biggest need heading into the summer: they needed to add a top-six centre to play behind Elias Pettersson.”-Wagner
Unfortunately for the Canucks it wasn’t in the cards to achieve that over the summer. The biggest reason was the current player market, and how the head office didn’t see the value in anyone available.
“«It’ll be expensive, but it’ll also be very expensive not to get one,» said Rutherford. «We’re going to be open to do whatever it takes, and probably on the trade market, to get that player.» Five months later, the Canucks are entering training camp with the exact same centres on the roster – no new additions – though not for lack of trying, according to Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin at Wednesday’s press conference.”-Wagner
Not only do we not know how well Pettersson and even Filip Chytil will even perform, their injury history is pretty discouraging too. If one of them goes down the Canucks will be completely exposed at arguably the most important position.
With the salary cap expected to increase significantly over the next few years, there is no reason why the Canucks cannot overpay a little now to get a big return on investment for the future.
