Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Dan Quinn said that Marcus Mariota will get the start.

“I said at the beginning we were going to be very diligent about his return to play and make sure we didn’t miss any steps. So we’re gonna be smart, not just fast,” Quinn said. “The player wants to do everything all the time, that’s who he is as a competitor, which is what I love, but that’s how we’ll roll.”

Daniels, who sprained his knee during a Thursday night loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, did practice in a limited fashion on Friday, but it was not enough for the team to want to play him. This will be the first game the second-year quarterback will miss in his young NFL career.

While Daniels didn’t miss a game in 2024, he was out for most of a Week 7 matchup against the Carolina Panthers with a rib injury, and he sat out the second half of the regular-season finale versus the Dallas Cowboys due to leg soreness. Mariota relieved Daniels both times and thrived under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, completing a combined 33-of-41 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns in a pair of Washington victories.

While Daniels said he was “good” after the 27-18 road loss to the Packers, his MRI indicated otherwise. He was sacked four times and hit another six times in the defeat.

Other notable Week 3 injuries:

Tucker Kraft will be a game-time decision for the Green Bay Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur said on Friday. The tight avoided a serious knee injury in practice, with the injury later determined to be more of a “tweak.” Injured reserved is not being considered. “He has to feel comfortable and be cleared,” LaFleur said.

A toe injury kept San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy sidelined for Week 2, but it’s possible he returns against the Arizona Cardinals this week, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Purdy was a “long shot” to play against the New Orleans Saints and missed the 49ers’ 26-21 victory. Now, says Shanahan, the quarterback has “a chance [to play].”

Emeka Egbuka was back at practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday after missing this week due to a hip and groin injury. The rookie wide receiver out of Ohio State is second on the Bucs with 96 receiving yards and leads the team with three touchdown catches. He is listed as questionable.

Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy remained limited in practice and it’s unclear if he’ll return for Sunday night’s game against the New York Giants. Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder in Week 1 after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce.

Quarterback Justin Fields has already been ruled out for the New York Jets’ game against the Buccaneers after suffering a concussion in Week 2.
