Former Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Bernie Parent, who won 2 Stanley Cups with the team during his playing career, has passed away at 80 as confirmed by the team today.
The Flyers and Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Bernie Parent, a true legend, one of the most famous and beloved players, and most popular figures in the history of the organization and city of Philadelphia.
Parent, who was from Montreal, started his NHL career with the Boston Bruins but was left unprotected in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft and was taken by the Flyers.
Following a trade to the Maple Leafs, he was eventually sent back to the Flyers and later became one of the best goalies in NHL history.
Bernie Parent was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
The Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975, and Parent won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP both years. He also won the Vezina Trophy in both years as the NHL’s best goalie during the regular season.
He played in 5 NHL All-Star games, and after he retired, his No. 1 sweater was retired by the team and was the 2nd number they’d taken out of circulation.
Parent was then inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984, and 20 years later, was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
Up until 2007, he held the record for most wins in a single year by any NHL goalie with 47; the record was later broken by fellow Montreal native Martin Brodeur with the divisional foe New Jersye Devils.
