For more than 30 years, the Tamworth community has come together each October to support breast health initiatives through the Lady Golfers Serendipity Pink Golf Day, a cherished event for local women golfers.
This year’s event will be held from 8am on Tuesday, 14 October, at the Tamworth Golf Club, promising a fun-filled day of golf, camaraderie, and community spirit.
The day will feature a 4BBB Stableford competition, where participants will enjoy a friendly round of golf dressed in pink, celebrating the importance of breast health awareness.
Following the game, players will gather for coffee, drinks, and the presentation of prize winners, including nearest-the-pin awards. Raffles will be drawn, and Serendipity merchandise will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the charity’s ongoing work.
Serendipity is a small, volunteer-run charity that has supported the North West Cancer Centre, Inala House, and other local health services for three decades.
Susan Goodwin, president of the Serendipity organisation explained the charity’s origins.
“Thirty years ago, one of the ladies in our group was diagnosed with cancer. She children and her friends helped by cooking meals and supporting her,” Ms Goodwin said.
“That’s how our committee started, and we’ve been helping the community ever since.”
Over the years, Serendipity has lobbied for expanded oncology services in Tamworth, helping establish the North West Cancer Centre, which now serves patients from across a 300-kilometre radius. The charity provides essential support, including garments for breast and prostate cancer patients, assistance with radiation therapy needs, and vital medical equipment.
A notable achievement came in 2020, when Serendipity donated a SoZo body composition analyser to the Lymphoedema Early Intervention Clinic at Tamworth Hospital.
“The SoZo is like a set of scales which quickly and precisely calculates tissue and fluid composition of the body, which is especially important in the early detection of lymphoedema in surgical and cancer patients,” Ms Goodwin said.
“This $17,000 machine is now being used in a full clinic run by our Occupational Therapists, helping patients every day.”
“We may be a small committee, but our volunteers are passionate. Our goal is simple – to raise awareness about breast health, support patients in our community, and provide practical help wherever it’s needed. The community support we receive is incredible.”
The Tamworth Lady Golfers Serendipity Pink Golf Day is more than a fundraiser – it’s a celebration of community and solidarity.
“It’s about having fun, thinking pink, and encouraging women to have their breast screens. Everyone who participates contributes to supporting those affected by cancer in the North West region,” Ms Goodwin said.
Bookings for the event can be made at the Tamworth Golf Club Pro Shop on 6765 9980.
