SEATTLE — The Mariners have set the stage for an unparalleled weekend of sports and traffic.
After winning the AL West on Wednesday night, the Mariners find themselves one win away from locking down a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the American League Divisional Series (ALDS) in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Playoffs.
The MLB has already announced that the ALDS will begin on Oct. 4th, with Game Two on Oct. 5th.
The Seattle Sounders FC are scheduled to take on the rival Portland Timbers at 7:30 on Oct. 4th, and the Seahawks are playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1:05 pm on Oct.5th.
It is likely that MLB would try to stagger the start of the games no to directly coincide with the other, but it leads to a scenario where more than 115,000 fans are trying to get to the Mariners and the Seahawks at the same time.
Metro, Sound Transit, SDOT and the WSDOT all said Thursday that they’ve had discussions about altering plans.
A Sound Transit spokesperson said the agency already added two runs from Lakewood on the 5th, and one run from Everett, as part of a special Seahawks Sounder service.
But it is now negotiating with BSNF for special service on that Saturday as well.
WSDOT, which has been doing all sorts of construction on I-5, I-405, SR-520, and SR-167, said in a briefing on Thursday that it has provisions in contracts to avoid construction on Mariners playoff weekends, although it is also trying to balance construction schedules around the rainy season.
“It’s not just going to be Metro, it’s going to be the Seattle streetcar. It’s going to be the King County Water Taxi. It’s going to be Link light rail for Metro. We are looking at having additional runs focusing on getting people out of the stadiums once the games are done and also getting them there in time down for first pitch and kickoff,” said Metro spokesperson Al Sanders, while wearing a blue Mariners jacket.
“Metro handled Taylor Swift. Metro handled Beyonce. Metro handled the All Star game. We’re ready,” Sanders said.
“SDOT has “Dual Event” traffic management plans in place for weekends like October 4–5, when multiple large events overlap in SoDo. These plans are designed to keep people moving safely and efficiently. They typically include extra traffic officers, directional street closures near the stadiums, and extended traffic operations to help manage large volumes of event goers, whether they’re walking, biking, taking transit, or driving,” a SDOT spokesperson said in a statement.
MLB has not announced pitch times for either game.
