CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers were able to get a look at rookie guard VJ Edgecombe in a training camp setting on Saturday as they look to prepare for the 2025-26 season. The Sixers selected him with the No. 3 pick in the draft and are hoping he can step in right away and give them a different aspect with his electric speed with the basketball.

Edgecombe was able to get on the floor for his first real NBA practice on Saturday and show what he can do in front of coach Nick Nurse and the rest of his new teammates.

“It was great,” Edgecombe said. “The intensity was high. We play in less than a week, so it’s really just getting reps. It was a great practice overall.”

Edgecombe and the Sixers will head to Abu Dhabi to take on the New York Knicks for two preseason games. That will give him an opportunity to get out in a real NBA game–other than summer league–and show what he can do. However, these practices are going to be important for him to get an idea of what the NBA game is like. He is already learning one important thing about the league: everybody can play.

“How good these players are. Yeah…they’re good!” Edgecombe laughed. “They’re in the NBA for a reason. That’s what I’ve realized. Everyone in our league can hoop.”

Nurse and his staff will use Edgecombe in plenty of different roles. Whether he’s a point guard, shooting guard, or even a small forward in some 3-guard lineups. Nurse also hinted at some 4-guard lineups in today’s ever-changing NBA so the Sixers will prepare Edgecombe for plenty of different roles and positions as a rookie.

“It’s basketball, at the end of the day,” Edgecombe said succinctly. “I feel like everyone on the court is interchangeable, so whoever’s got the ball can bring it up. We have a lot of versatile guys. Sometimes I’m running, sometimes I’m bringing the ball up, sometimes I’m trailing, but I’m just out there trying to make winning plays.”

The Sixers will have one more day of camp at their facility on Sunday before the trip out to Abu Dhabi.
