Chinese authorities have approved reserve reports submitted by two major lithium producers in Yichun, Jiangxi, including CATL (HKG: 3750), easing concerns over production disruptions, Bloomberg reported today.

CATL’s Jianxiawo mine, which halted production last month, has now received reserve approval, the report cited people familiar with the matter as saying.

They said this brings the mine one step closer to obtaining a mining permit and resuming production.

Gotion High-tech (SHE: 002074) disclosed to Bloomberg on Monday that it maintained continuous production during this period and has received approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The two miners were among eight required by the Yichun municipal government to submit reserve reports by the end of September after an audit uncovered administrative shortcomings, the report noted.

CATL suspended production at its Jianxiawo lithium mine on August 10 due to the expiration of a key mining permit, triggering a surge in lithium carbonate prices.

CATL said at the time it was actively processing the permit renewal application.

On September 9, the official Securities Times reported that a CATL subsidiary in Yichun held a special meeting on resuming operations at the lithium mine.

The company expected to resume operations soon as progress on applying for mining rights and permits was proceeding smoothly, the report cited an informed source as saying.

Lithium is a key raw material for batteries, which typically account for a significant portion of an electric vehicle (EV) model’s cost.

Lithium carbonate and iron phosphate are primary raw materials for lithium iron phosphate (LFP). Yichun is a major production hub often referred to as Asia’s lithium capital.
