The Gist
Gwyneth Paltrow shared a series of mirror selfies on Instagram on September 29, teasing her next podcast guest.
In one photo, she wore nothing but rust colored underwear with a striped shirt and a makeup-free look.
She also shared various other looks, including a bathrobe, white jeans, a black dress, a gray T-shirt dress, and capri leggings.
Gwyneth Paltrow appears to be doing a little method dressing—inspired by none other than queen and mother of the Upper East Side herself, Kelly Rutherford. In a new Instagram post, Paltrow shared a series of mirror selfies that featured looks inspired by Rutherford. “in honor of tomorrow’s podcast guest,” she teased in the caption.
One look saw Paltrow rocking a classic black-and-white, pin-striped button-up, tucked into a pair of rust-colored underwear. She wore a gold choker necklace and a pair of glasses with the look and appeared to go makeup-free as she posed in the mirror.

Paltrow’s other looks all adhered to her tried and true quiet luxury style. She rocked a classic black halter dress with a subtle sweetheart neckline, a simple boxy gray T-shirt dress, a pair of white jeans with a strappy top, and a white robe as she sat in the makeup chair. All very classy, very Upper East Side-approved.

Since starring as Gossip Girl’s Lily van der Woodsen, Rutherford has found fame online as the so-called “Birkin Mom,” thanks to her effortlessly chic mirror selfies from her apartment elevator. Just take last week’s elegant white maxiskirt and jacket look, or her funky blue-and-white printed minidress from earlier this summer.
“It was not premeditated at all,” Rutherford told Harrod’s of the Birkin Mom phenomenon. “It was literally just convenient. I simply wanted to support the brands I was wearing and have fun. My daughter had to teach me how to hold my phone properly. I guess in the beginning I was doing it wrong. I don’t know… I didn’t think it would become a thing—or that I would end up in the elevator so much.”
Clearly, Paltrow is just as big a fan of Rutherford’s mirror selfies as the rest of us. “You are a fashion icon,” Paltrow said as she welcomed Rutherford on the podcast. “The art of expressing yourself sartorially I really relate to.” So much so that she couldn’t help but recreate some of those iconic mirror selfies!
