The Adelaide Crows Foundation’s successful STEMFooty program continues to make an impact in schools across regional South Australia with the support of Crows players and co-major AFLW partner BHP.
This year the program has been rolled out in Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Whyalla, reaching approximately 750 school students.
The STEMFooty program runs for 10 weeks within school curriculums and uses football principles to teach students about science and maths.
The interactive program taps into students’ love of AFL and incorporates the game’s fundamentals with learning outcomes.
Through BHP’s support for STEMFooty, the program is able to reach more schools in the Upper Spencer Gulf Region, as well as Roxby Downs.
“The STEMFooty program is a testament to our shared vision of empowering young minds and fostering a love for STEM subjects, particularly in regional and Indigenous communities,” said Anna Wiley, Copper SA Asset President at BHP.
“By integrating sports and education, we are inspiring the next generation of leaders and innovators, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to succeed.”
Quantitative pre and post program data taken from those who took part in the program in 2024 showed that:
Students improved their STEMFooty knowledge by an average of 33 per cent
Students had a 22% increase in enthusiasm and interest in learning about STEM
Students’ confidence in their ability to succeed in STEM rose by 23 per cent
Across the cohort, strategic learning behaviours increased by more than 21 per cent
Students’ ability to interpret data, reason logically and solve problems grew by 22 per cent
BHP has also been co-major partner of the Crows AFLW team since its inception and has recently extended their support for a further three years, until the end of 2028.
