OCTOBER 2 – RICHARDS AND ROWELL CLAIM TOP GONGS
Western Bulldogs midfielder Ed Richards and Gold Coast Suns on-baller Matt Rowell have both claimed their club best and fairest awards respectively.
Richards polled 299 votes and narrowly edged out skipper and six-time winner Marcus Bontempelli (286), while heart and soul Bulldog Tom Liberatore (279) also featured on the podium for the Dogs, while just two votes separated Rowell (72) from captain Noah Anderson (71) and tough nut Touk Miller (70) at the Suns.

Gold Coast Suns star and 2025 Brownlow Medalist Matt Rowell has claimed his first club best and fairest award in a close finish with a pair of teammates.
Just two votes separated Rowell (72) from captain Noah Anderson (71) and tough nut Touk Miller (70) in a thrilling vote count from a successful Suns season.
Rowell became the club’s second Brownlow Medal leader in recent weeks, following in the footsteps of the great Gary Ablett jnr.
Rowell averaged 26 disposals, 8.6 tackles and 8.2 clearances in a career-best season which also saw him earn a maiden All-Australian blazer.

Melbourne captain Max Gawn has added another honour to his already glittering AFL CV, claiming another Demons best and fairest.
Gawn, who won the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy in 2018 and 2019, polled 592 votes to comfortably beat midfielder Christian Petracca (479) and Kysaiah Pickett (467). Jake Bowey (459) and Christian Salem (404) rounded out the top five.
The 33-year-old has now won three Melbourne best and fairest awards to go with his eight All-Australian blazers, the 2018 AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year and, of course, the 2021 Demons premiership as captain.

North Melbourne’s best and fairest count has ended in a tie for just the sixth time in club history, with Harry Sheezel and Tristan Xerri sharing the Syd Barker Medal.
In a thrilling count, Sheezel and Xerri finished on 207 votes each ahead of 2024 club champion Luke Davies-Uniacke (187), with recruit Luke Parker (167) and captain Jy Simpkin (164) rounded out the top five.
Sheezel, who averaged 29.3 disposals per game in 2025, claimed his second Syd Barker Medal after winning the medal in his debut 2023 season, while All-Australian squad member Xerri claimed his maiden club champion award.
Five Kangaroos coaches vote individually after each round via a 4-3-2-1 voting system, meaning a player can receive a maximum of 20 votes in any one game. The votes can be applied to every player but don’t have to be awarded if a player is not deserving.

PORT ADELAIDE

Superstar midfielder Zak Butters has cemented his place as a Port Adelaide great, claiming a third consecutive best and fairest award.
Butters took out the John Cahill Medal for a third straight year, polling 134 votes to finish 16 votes ahead of much-improved forward Mitch Georgiades (118) and captain Connor Rozee (117). Recruit Joe Richards (84 votes) and defender Aliir Aliir (73 votes) rounded out the top five.
Butters, who averaged 28 disposals in 2025, joined Warren Tredrea (four), Kane Cornes (four) and Robbie Gray (three) as the only Power players to win at least three club champion awards in the AFL era. Gray won three straight Cahill medals between 2014 and 2016.
“I think I’ve still got a lot of growth,” Butters said upon accepting his award.
“Something I’m still working on is my fitness and running and my clearance game. I’m trying to work with Connor and ‘Pep’ (Sam Powell-Pepper) and ‘Drewy’ (Willem Drew) and a few of the other boys and hopefully (also) help some of these younger boys become better players and better people.”

Ball magnet Tim Taranto has claimed a second Jack Dyer Medal in three years after being named Richmond’s best and fairest for 2025.
Taranto polled 47 votes from his coaches to pip triple premiership defender Nick Vlastuin (44) and fellow midfielder Jacob Hopper (40).
Taranto played all but two games for Richmond in 2025, averaging 25.6 disposals, 11.9 contested possessions, 5.5 clearances and 4.6 score involvements per match.
Under the Jack Dyer Medal voting system, all players on match day receive a rating from 0-5 from the club’s match committee based on their overall performance. The Tigers said votes aren’t allocated for, what the match committee deems, ‘below average’ performances.

Superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s breathtaking 2025 campaign has been further recognised, claiming his maiden St Kilda best and fairest award.
Wanganeen-Milera was a runaway Trevor Barker Award winner, polling 313 votes to beat reigning club champion Callum Wilkie (238) and two-time winner Jack Sinclair (223). Much-improved duo Max Hall (169) and Marcus Windhager (158) rounded out the top five.
Wanganeen-Milera developed into one of the AFL’s best players in 2025, booting 17 goals and averaging 29.9 disposals from 23 matches, earning him maiden All-Australian honours at half-back.

The dual premiership Tiger claimed the 2025 John Worsfold Medal as West Coast’s best and fairest player, polling 338 votes to edge out defender Reuben Ginbey (286) and young star Harley Reid (267). Jack Graham (254) and Brady Hough (252) rounded out the top five.
The versatile Baker played every match for West Coast in 2025, averaging career-high disposals (22.1) and contested possessions (9.4).

Richards became one of the game’s premier on-ballers in 2025, averaging 25.8 disposals, 8.3 score involvements and 5.7 clearances a game, ranked as the second best player in the competition via Champion Data’s AFL Player Ratings. He also earned a maiden All-Australian blazer.
