ORLANDO, Fla. — With just three practices under his belt, Orlando Magic rookie Jase Richardson has left a lasting mark on teammates and coaches early in training camp.

Richardson caught the attention of the Magic in the draft after one season at Michigan State because of his 3-point shooting and ability to take care of the ball. It also bodes well for the team that the 6-foot-1 Richardson is lightning-quick and boasts a 6-foot-6 wingspan.

The 25th pick has showcased those attributes in front of the team rather confidently since getting started on Tuesday. The early display by Richardson hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“One thing I love about Jase is that he came in and is showing what he can bring to this team,” center Wendell Carter Jr. said. “We’re all just accepting it. He is a fantastic player and a fantastic learner. When he is wrong, he is looking for advice. When he is right, he is going to talk his stuff. I love it. I love his competitiveness. He is going to make it easier for this team.”

Richardson was an All-Big Ten third team selection with the Spartans, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range. He ranked ninth in the country in box plus-minus (plus-11.6) and 14th in offensive rating (132).

The son of former 14-year veteran Jason Richardson hasn’t shied away from asking Carter and the rest of the team questions to learn the ins and outs of the NBA. He wants to be receptive to their advice while also making a positive impact on the court.

I always try to come into everything I do with the utmost confidence in myself. When I came to training camp, I just wanted to show that I can compete with these guys. Bringing the energy, talk a little trash if I have to, show I’m not just a rookie that is just going to suck up to these guys. Then, also being a sponge and respecting other guys when they try to talk to me.

Richardson joins a team with heightened expectations, as the Magic are projected to be among the front-runners in the Eastern Conference. He is relishing the opportunity to compete for rotation minutes in the backcourt, along with the likes of Jalen Suggs, Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones.

Jamahl Mosley and the Magic hope to tap into his skill set as a player who can run an uptempo offense, while also picking up 94 feet on defense if needed. They will get their first look at Richardson in the preseason on Saturday against the Miami Heat in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“He is just a good player,” guard Anthony Black said. “Obviously, his shot is what stands out the most, a really good shooter. Also, he is just a really smart player. He knows when to cut and what to look for when he has the ball. He is just a smart guard who really knows how to play. He works hard and is a good teammate.”
